A basic explanation of the five ranks and belts for Functional Sport Combat at the Wise Warrior Gym.
This ranking system is for tracking the student's increasing levels of technical knowledge and practical skill in the realm of mixed martial arts. While classes have no official uniform, the belt is occasionally worn during evaluations or for special gatherings where ranks and belts are awarded. Mixed martial arts as defined at Wise Warrior Gym is Alive, functional sport-combat in three phases Stand-Up, Clinch and Ground (both unarmed and with weapons)
COLORED BELT DESCRIPTION
There are four colored belts a student must earn before being awarded a black belt. Each is a double-wrap obi belt in order of the W.W.G. color progression, white, blue, green and brown. Stripes are a form of intra-belt recognition of progress and indicate a student's skill level within the belt rank.
Stripes are black, one-inch wide and encircle the belt's width (except the white belt which has blue stripes). The first stripe is placed two inches from the end of the belt and consecutive stripes are spaced an inch apart. Three stripes must be earned before the student may be considered for promotion to the next belt rank.
White Belt: three blue stripes until Blue Belt
Blue Belt: three black stripes until next belt
Green Belt: three black stripes until next belt
Brown Belt: three black stripes until Black Belt
BLACK BELT DESCRIPTION
Experts in mixed martial arts can earn a Black-Belt which is represented by a black colored, double-wrap obi belt.
Black Belt: expert level mixed martial artist
When a practitioner can be considered an expert at functional sport-combat and mixed martial arts, the head-coach may award a Black Belt. After Black Belt is achieved, stripe markings are known as degrees.
PROGRESSION AND TIMELINE
In theory a student can earn a Brown Belt within 5 years with consistent attendance and excellent performance in class.
Belts are awarded every 12 to 18 months with stripe testing to take place every 4 to 6 months. Belts or stripes can be spontaneously awarded at any time to a student though the everyday observation of the coach. Actual formal performance testing conducted by the Wise Warrior Gym coaches is the other method of obtaining belts and stripes.
